How Many Times Did Isra & Mi’raaj Occur?
Question
(4): How many times did the Miʿraaj occur, and in what manner did it take place?
Answer
The view held by the vast majority of the Companions and their successors, as well as the jurists, Hadith scholars, theologians, eminent scholars, and Sufi masters, is that the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمexperienced the Miʿraaj only once in a state of wakefulness, with both body and soul. However, spiritually, it occurred several times in the form of visions during sleep. Therefore, Allamah Shihaabuddeen Ahmad bin Muhammad Qastalaani Alaihir Rahmah writes in his famous book Al-MawaahibulLadunniyyah Bil-Minahil-Muhammadiyyah:
Translation: Some of the Aarifeen (Spiritually Enlightened Gnostics) have stated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمexperienced the Miʿraaj thirty-four times; among these, one journey was with his physical body, while the others were spiritual journeys seen in dreams. Thus, the truth is that there was one Miʿraaj, which took place with both his body and soul while awake. This is the position adopted by the majority of the scholars of Hadith, jurists, and theologians, and it is supported by the apparent meanings of authentic narrations. (Al-MawaahibulLadunniyyah bil-Minahil-Muhammadiyyah, Volume 2, Page 341, Darul Kutubul-Ilmiyyah, Beirut) - Likewise, Allamah Mulla Ahmad Jiwan Alaihir Rahmah writes:
Translation: The soundest and most correct view is that the Miʿraaj occurred while awake, with both body and soul, and this is the belief of Ahl-e-Sunnat Wa Jama‘at. Therefore, whoever claims that the Miʿraaj was only spiritual, or that it occurred only in a dream, is an innovator, misguided and misleading and a transgressor.
