PERFORMING NIKAH IN THE MASJID ON A FRIDAY

THE ANSWER 1: To perform Nikaah in the Masjid is proven from the Hadith Shareef and it is Mustahab. In Tirmizi Shareef, it is narrated from Hazrat Ayesha Radi Allahu Anha that the

Announce and publicize This Nikaah and perform it in the Masaajid. (Tirmizi Shareef/Chapter of Nikaah/Volume 1/Page number 556/Published by Raza Academy Mumbai) By explaining the above mentioned Hadith Shareef, Hazrat Allamah Mulla Ali Qari Hanafi Alaihir Rahma writes in his authentic book, Mirqaatul Mafaateeh:

(Perform Nikaah in the Masaajid) and that is, the purpose of performing the Nikaah in the Masaajid is to announce and publicize or to obtain the blessings of the Masjid, and it is appropriate that along with the Masjid, consider performing Nikaah in the blessed time so that in the performing of Nikaah, there may be more Noor (light) and Suroor (happiness). Imam ibn Humaam Alaihir Rahma said that to have the Nikaah in the Masjid is Mustahab because Nikaah is an act of worship, and it is mustahab to have Nikaah on Friday. And it is in Fataawa Shaami:

The announcement of Nikaah and reciting the sermon (Khutbah) of Nikaah and having Nikaah in the Masjid on Friday, are all Mustahab (actions). (Fataawa Shaami/Volume 5/Page number 28-29/Chapter of Nikaah/Published by Zia-ul-Quran publications Lahore) As far as the Mustahab time of performing Nikaah on a Friday is concerned, then in this regard, in the explanation of above mentioned Hadith e Paak of Tirmizi Shareef, the famous Mufassir Hazrat Allamah Mufti Ahmad Yaar Khan Naeemi Alaihir Rahma writes in the following manner: The Jurists say that it is Mustahab for the Nikaah to be performed on a Friday after the Jumuah Salaah in the presence of all the Musallees (congregants) in the Jaama Masjid so that the Nikaah may be announced and at the same time, the blessings of the place and time may be obtained. It is also that Nikaah is Ibaadat and for Ibaadat, the House of Ibaadat in other words, the Masjid is more suitable. THE ANSWER 2: It is Mustahab on Friday to perform the Nikaah in the Masjid but if the Jumuah Adhan is given, then after it, it is not allowed to perform the Nikaah until the Jumuah Salaah has been offered as Huzoor Ala Hazrat Alaihir Rahma writes in Fataawa Razviyyah Shareef: To perform Nikaah is allowed on any day but if the Jumuah Adhan has been given, then after it, it is not allowed to perform the Nikaah until the Jumuah Salaah has been offered because as soon as Jumuah Adhan is given then hastening towards the Jumuah Salaah is Waajib. Allah Almighty says in the Holy Qur'an:

O people who believe! When the call for prayer is given on (Friday) the day of congregation, rush towards the remembrance of Allah and stop buying and selling. (Translation of Kanzul Imaan/Surah Juma'h 62:9)

Huzoor Ala Hazrat Alaihir Rahma also says: Even then, if the Nikaah will be performed after the Jumuah Adhan, it will be a sin but the Nikaah will be valid. (Fataawa Razviyyah Shareef volume 9/page number 118/Chapter of Nikaah/Printed by Imam Ahmad Raza Academy Bareilly Shareef)

Note: The Adhan here refers to the first Adhan of Jumuah and not the second Adhan which is attached with the Khutbah of Jumuah. Although the first Adhan of Jumuah was added in the time of Hazrat Uthman e Ghani Radi Allahu Anh, but the compulsion of hastening towards the Masjid and to discontinue buying and selling on a Friday is related to the First Adhan of Jumuah. (Khazaainul Irfaan) Similarly it is in Durr e Mukhtaar, Fataawa Qazi Khan, Al Hidaayah and Jaddul Mumtaar.

The summary of the above two answers is that it is Mustahab to perform Nikaah on a Friday in the Masjid and the recommended time for this is after Jumuah Salaah and on a Friday and if the first Adhan of Jumuah has been given then after it, it is not allowed to perform the Nikaah until the Jumuah Salaah has been offered. In other words, it is not allowed to perform Nikaah after the Adhan of Jumuah before the Khutbah of Jumuah Salaah.
