INCLUSION OF AQEEQAH IN A QURBANI ANIMAL
Question
Can An Aqeeqah Be Added To The Sacrificial Animal (Qurbani Animal)?
Question posed by: Irfan Qadri, Durban, South Africa
Answer
The Aqeeqah can be added to large sacrificial animals (animals intended for Qurbani) such as cows, oxen, etc. as it is stated in Raddul Muhtaar:
Translation: Similarly, if someone intends to include in the sacrificial animal a portion as the Aqeeqah of that child i.e. that son or that daughter of his, who was born before the days of sacrifice (Qurbani), then to do so is permissible according to Shari'ah, because it is also a means of being grateful to Allah Almighty on his bounty of being blessed with a child and it is a means of him receiving rewards. (Raddul Muhtaar volume 9, page 472/Chapter of Sacrifice) However, in keeping a portion of Aqeeqah in the large sacrificial animals, it is better to keep two parts for the Aqeeqah of the boy and one part for the Aqeeqah of the girl. The elucidation regarding this is as follows in Fataawa Amjadiyah: "In Aqeeqah, it is Sunnah to slaughter two goats for a boy and one goat for a girl.” It is in the Hadith Shareef:
Two Sheep Are To Be Sacrificed On Behalf of A Boy And One Sheep On Behalf of A Girl And it is proven that one seventh of a cow and a camel is a substitute for a goat (sheep) in the Qurbani. And in the books of jurisprudence, it has been explained that Aqeeqah can be included in the Qurbani of a cow or a camel.
It is in Tahtaawi Al-ad-Dur:
So, when including the share of Aqeeqah in the Qurbani is regarded permissible, then we have understood that the Aqeeqah can be included in a portion of a cow or a camel and the Shari'ah has made one seventh of it a substitute for a goat. Therefore, the Aqeeqah of a boy should have two portions (shares) and that of a girl should have one portion. In other words, one seventh is sufficient. So, in one cow, the Aqeeqah of seven girls or three boys and one girl can be done. It is common amongst some people that parents should not eat the Aqeeqah meat. It is incorrect. Parents can also eat the Aqeeqah meat and it can be fed to the wealthy as well.
