Question

What is the shari'ah ruling regarding the recitation of the Holy Qur'an of a Muqtadee in Salaah while praying behind the Imam?

Question Posed By: Yusuf Bhai Chatsworth Durban South Africa.

Answer

According to the Ahanaaf, reciting Holy Qur'an behind the Imam in any Raka'at of any Salaah, whether it is the Jahri Salaah (Salaah with audible recitation) or the Sirri Salaah (Salaah with inaudible or soft recitation), is Makrooh e Tahreemi and impermissible.

Therefore, in the Holy Qur'an, Allah Almighty says:

Translation: And when the Qur'an is recited, listen to it attentively and keep silent, so that you may receive mercy. (Surah Al-Aa'raf 7:204/Kanzul Imaan) Under the above-mentioned Aayat-e-Kareemah, Huzoor Sadr-ulAfaazil Alaihir Rahmah writes in Khazaain-ul-Irfaan: This verse proves that whenever the Holy Quran is recited, whether in Salaah or outside of Salaah, it is compulsory (Waajib) to listen and remain silent. The views of the vast majority of the Companions of the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمregarding this verse states that this verse refers to the muqtadi listening and being silent in Salaah. (Khazaain-ulIrfaan).

(1) It is narrated in Sahih Muslim Shareef on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari Radiallahu Anhu, that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, says:

Translation: When you offer Salaah, make your Saff (rows) straight, and let one of you lead the others. When he says the Takbeer, then say the Takbeer, and when he recites, listen attentively. (Sahih Muslim Shareef Volume 1 page 339/Chapter of Tashah-hud In Salaah) This Hadith Shareef clearly instructs to remain silent while the Imam is reciting.

(2) And it is narrated in Ibn e Maajah Shareef on the authority of Hazrat Jaabir Radiallahu Anhu that the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمsays:

Translation: Whoever has an Imam (Muqtadi), the recitation of the Imam is his recitation. (Ibn e Maajah Shareef Volume 1 page 338/Chapter of Salaah/Shabbeer brothers Lahore) This Hadith Shareef is also a very clear Hadith on the position of the Ahnaaf, in which a general rule is also stated that the Imam's recitation is sufficient for the muqtadi. Therefore, the muqtadi must not recite behind the Imam at all.

Qira'at of the muqtadi behind the Imam is makrooh e Tahreemi as it is mentioned in Fataawa Shaami:

Translation: The Muqtadi will absolutely not make the Qira'at. If the Muqtadi recites then it will be Makrooh e Tahreemi. (Fataawa Shaami

Volume 2 page 418-420/Chapter of Salaah/Zia-ul-Quran Publications Lahore)

Fataawa Razawiyyah Shareef states: "The position of the Hanafi Madhab regarding the recitation of Muqtadi behind the Imam is Makrooh e Tahreemi". (Fataawa Razawiyyah Shareef Volume 6 page 240 / Raza Foundation Lahore)

And it is stated in Bahaar e Shariat: Qira'at is not permissible in any Namaaz for a Muqtadi. He is not permitted to recite Surah Fatiha, nor any verse, whether in a Namaaz where it is recited softly nor in a Namaaz where it is read aloud. The Qira'at of the Imam is sufficient for the Muqtadi. (Bahaar e Shariat Volume 3 page 185 / Imam Mustafa Raza Research Centre Overport Durban).
