Hunting for sport

Fatwa 29351English
Jurisprudence and Rulings (Fiqh)

Question

Hunting is permitted in Islam only when necessary for food. Taking the life of an animal for sport, without intending to eat from it or otherwise benefit from it, is prohibited. Is this statement true?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is disliked to hunt for only sporting purposes or as a pastime. [1] If one hunts for the meat, skin or any other useful part of the animal, then it is permissible to do so. One should be wary that he does not become so engrossed in hunting that he becomes neglectful of his religious duties. Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam has mentioned:

“Whosoever goes in pursuit of game (animals) becomes negligent (of his religious duties).” [2]
