Students wasting food.

Question

I am based in Tanzania. I am studying in an Islamic High School. My fellow Muslim room mates are indulged in watching football. What can I do about this?

Also, the same room mates waste alot of food.

Is there an islamic way to kindly explain the above to them, that its wrong?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, The Most Merciful.

As-salaamu `alaykum wa-ramatullahi wa-barakatuh.

The most effective way to correct a wrong is to lead by example.

Inform your room mates that you will take charge of the left over fresh food to earn them reward. You may then;

Give the food to the poor needy with the intention of sadaqa.

Give the food to birds or animals.

In the case where one does not have any reach to animals or birds, leave it in an open place where some bird or animal will find it`s way to the food.[1]

Your colleagues will observe your conduct and learn how to avoid wasting food and learn to serve fellow creation of Allah.

You may share the following hadith with them;

Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said;

“The best charity one can do is to fill an empty stomach (human or animal, any living being)”

And Allah Ta`ala Knows Best.
