Question

I have a question and im verry ashamed of it.

I cheated on my husband during our marriage. Im extremely sorry and ask for forgiveness every day. I'm sure i will never do this sin ever again and i will forever live with guilt. Im so sorry for what i did and i hope Allah will forgive me.

I don't want to tell my husband about it and i want to be a good wife in the future. Now I want to know if my marriage is valid if i choose to not tell him anything about it. Or is it obliged for me to tell him?

Please help me and answer my question so i can now what to do.

Answer

Wa Alaykumus Salaam Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuh.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Sister in Islam,

Adultery is an evil and major sin. Allah ﷻ says in the Quraan:

Translation: And do not even go close to Zina (adultery/fornication). Verily it is immoral filth and an evil course. [Isra:32]

Zina incurs the wrath of Allah ﷻ. In an Islamic state, if a married person commits Zina, it is punishable by stoning to death.

Sister, you mention that you have made the mistake of adultery and you are very ashamed and remorseful. Your remorse is a sign of your Imaan. Nabi ﷺ mentions in a Hadith: [1]

Translation: When your evil deeds dispirit you, and your good deeds please you, then you are a true believer. [Musnad Ahmed]

True remorse will prevent one from coming close to any sin in future. Express this remorse before Allah ﷻ and use it a medium of seeking His forgiveness. If there is sincerity in your remorse, then there will be sincerity in your Tawbah as well.

Nabi ﷺ has mentioned: [2]

Translation: Sincere remorse is repentance. [Ibn Majah 4252]

Allah ﷻ is Most Forgiving and Most Merciful. He readily accepts sincere repentance from His servants.

Allah ﷻ says:

Translation: Whosoever repents after his wrongdoing and reforms his ways, then verily Allah Ta'ala is Most Forgiving and Most Merciful. [Al-Maidah:39]

Consider the following Hadith as well: [3]

Translation: Every child of Adam (عليه السلام) is a sinner, and the best of sinners is the one who repents. [Tirmizi:2499]

Thank Allah ﷻ for concealing your sin. You should not expose to any person what Allah ﷻ has kept concealed, not even to your husband.

Repent sincerely to Allah ﷻ and also ask Allah ﷻ to increase love between you and your husband.

And Allah Ta'ala Knows best
