Rejecting A Marriage Proposal

Question

Is it permissible to turn down a marriage proposal due to having to move far from my parents, making it difficult for us to meet often?

Answer

In principle, when one receives a suitor, one should always make the benchmark Deen and good character. If the suitor is Deeni-inclined and also possesses good character, then one should consider the proposal. However, if getting married far from one’s parents may result in future problems between spouses, as the girl will not be able to visit one’s parents, then it will be permissible to turn down the proposal.

Hadrat Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is reported to have said, “Nikaah is made to a woman for four reasons; for her wealth, her beauty, her family lineage and for her Deen. Be successful with the one that has Deen; may your hands be soiled (if you do not do as I have commanded you).”

Hadrat Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is reported to have said, “When such a person forwards a proposal to you with whose Deen and character you are pleased, then have the Nikaah performed to him, for if you do not do so, then corruption will become widespread on the earth.”
