Selling Goods Via Yaga
Question
I sell items on an app called Yaga. Yaga offers buyers to pay in installments via Mobicred at 18.25% interest per annum + fees. I am not entitled to the interest incurred if the buyer is late with payment. If I sell on Yaga knowing that some buyers might pay interest via this Mobicred facility, is my income Halaal? Am I considered as assisting in Riba?
Answer
In the queried scenario, it is permissible for you (the seller) to trade on Yaga with the proviso that there are no other invalid conditions in the transaction. The buyer has the option to purchase it for cash and save himself from interest. However, if he opts for credit and is therefore paying interest, then the repercussion of that will not fall onto the seller.
This is similar to businesses selling commodities on credit. When the client opts for credit and pays via the credit card machine, it is his responsibility to pay within 55 days to avoid interest. Failing to pay before 55 days and incurring interest is the responsibility of the client, the seller will not bear the repercussion of the client’s action.
