Is Making Origami Shapes Permissible?
Answer
Origami, which is the art of paper folding into shapes and figures, would be considered permissible when making shapes or figures of inanimate objects. With regards to Origami folding of animate objects, consider the following:
Our jurists have ruled that it is impermissible to manufacture anything that resembles a living being; be it human, animal or something unprecedented like a man with wings.
The ruling applies to 3-dimensional living beings, as well as 2 dimensional according to the official view.
Drawing a living being without essential external body parts would be permissible. By way of example, drawing a head without a body or an entire body without detailing the mouth would be permissible.
The only exception to manufacturing complete 3-dimensional living beings would be for young children. Since it’s permissible for them to play with it in as far as it contributes to their nurturing (tarbiyah).
In conclusion, Origami of animate objects would be permissible provided one adheres to clause 3 above.
