Can Females follow a Janāzah procession?

Question

The MJC does not publish the questioner's text; the fatwa title below stands in for the question.

Can Females follow a Janāzah procession?

Answer

1. There is a consensus in our madhhab that it is makrūh for females to follow the Janāzah procession. Makrūh refers to actions that are discouraged and frowned upon, although they do not result in any punishment or reward.

2. Accordingly, your concern is a valid one and we discourage women from following Janāzah processions especially to the maqbarah.

3. Ofcourse, this does not mean that women cannot visit the maqbarah at all. Scholars agree that it is encouraged for women to visit the graveyard with the intention of visiting the graves of Prophets or the righteous. Similarly, many scholars also consider it permissible for women to visit the graves of deceased relatives.

4. Nonetheless, when visiting the maqbarah, sisters should be mindful of observing Islamic etiquette and conduct. An action that may be permissible or encouraged can easily become dispraiseworthy or sinful by failing to adhere to the stipulations of the Sharī’ah.
