Circumcision for a New Muslim
Question
The MJC does not publish the questioner's text; the fatwa title below stands in for the question.
Circumcision for a New Muslim
Answer
Circumcision is not a prerequisite for an individual to embrace Islam.
The fundamental requirement is to bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and to testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Upon sincerely believing the above, a person is regarded as a Muslim.
After accepting Islam, it becomes incumbent on the individual to undergo circumcision. Failing to do so, when physically capable and without the risk of serious harm, is considered sinful. However, it does not negate one’s status of being Muslim.
