Question posed by: Zafar Khan Razvi Durban.

Answer

To have Jaadu (sorcery / black-magic) and evil spirits treated and incantations done by any non-Muslims, non-Muslim Aamils (‘spiritual’ practitioner) and astrologists, or soothsayers is impermissible and Haraam, and in some cases it is kufr, because a nonMuslim Aamil, astrologists and soothsayers etc. usually supplicate in their chanting and incantations for help from their false deities, and their amulets contain words of kufr and shirk and to treat or have treated any illness etc. through words of kufr and shirk are both impermissible and Haraam (Forbidden), and to knowingly have such treatment done is kufr. Imam Nawawi has stated in the Annotation of Sahih Muslim that,

Those ‘chantings’ (incantations) which are from the words of the unbelievers, and those whose meanings are unknown, are improper because it is possible that the meaning is kufr, or close to kufr or Makruh (abhorrent). (Fataawa Africa Page 151/152] Further, to have faith in that which is said by a non-Muslim Aamil, sorcerer or soothsayer is strictly sinful and deviance (to be misled) and in some cases it is kufr. Huzoor Aala Hazrat Imam Ahle Sunnat Alaihir Rahma quotes a Hadith in his authentic book Fataawa Razviyyah about going to a sorcerer and soothsayer and about regarding what he says to be true. The words of the Hadith are:

One who goes to an astrologer and soothsayer and he regards what they say to be the truth, then he has rejected that which has been revealed upon Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم. [It has been narrated by Ahmad and Haakim with a Sahih Chain From Abu Hurairah ]رضی الہ نض ہ Imam Ahmed and Abu Dawud have reported from Hazrat Abu Hurairah رضی الہ نض ہthat he has become detached from the Qur’an and Deen e Islam. [Fataawa Razviyyah Vol 31, Page 343] It is in Sharh Aqaa’id Nasafiyah:

To attest to (regard as authentic) that information about the unseen which the Soothsayer gives after asking from the Jinns is Kufr. [Sharh Aqaa’id Nasafiyah, Pg.170]

The Summary: Thus, if someone goes to a non-Muslim, to an Aamil who is an unbeliever, sorcerer and soothsayer, for the treatment of Jinn, sorcery, and other evil spirits and to have incantations done for the same, then this is impermissible and Haraam. Due to this reason, it is necessary for the said person to repent (make Tauba and Istighfaar) and it is necessary for him to now make this pledge that, I will never do such a thing again. If that person knows that the non-Muslim Aamil gives amulets which have kufr in them or if he chants incantations of kufr, and he accepts and believes his amulets and incantations to be Haq (the truth), then this has become kufr. In such a case, it is necessary for him to make Tajdeed e Imaan (Refresh his Imaan) and Tajdeed e Nikah (Refresh his Nikaah if he is married) as well.
