What is the meaning of the name Luqman? Was he a Prophet? Please list out his advices/teachings.

Answer

There is a difference of opinion as to whether Luqmaan (Alayhis salaam) was a prophet or not. However, the view of majority of the Ulama is that he was not a Nabi. He was a Hakeem (person full of wisdom). (Ma'ariful Qur'aan)

There are plenty of words of wisdom narrated from Luqmaan (Alayhis salaam). Wahb ibn Munabbih (RA) says, 'I have learnt/read more than 10,000 chapters of wisdom of Luqmaan (Alayhis salaam).' (Ibid vol.7 pg.35). Therefore, we would just suffice on some of the advices that have been mentioned by Allah Ta'ala:
'And (remember) when Luqmaan said to his son when he was advising him, 'O My son! Join not in worship others with Allah. verily, joining others in worship with Allah is a great Dhulm (wrong) indeed.'

'O my son! If it be (anything) equal to the weight of a grain of mustard seed and though it be in a rock, or in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Verily, Allah is rubtle (in bringing out that grain), well aware (of its place).'

'O My son! Aqimis salaat (offer prayers perfectly), enjoin (people) for Al-Ma'roof (Islamic monotheism and all that is good) and forbid from al-Munkar (disbelief in oneness of Allah - polytheism of jinds and all that is evil and bad) and bear with patience whatever befalls you. Verily, these are some of the important commandments ordered by Allah with no exemption.' (Surah Luqmaan)
