What the Darul Iftas say
“The bequest your mother made of distributing the estate equally is not permissible. The estate will have to be distributed in accordance to the law of shariah. The law of shariah is that the son will receive double share of the daughter.”
“The difference in inheritance is not based on the gender of the heir, but on three primary conditions: The degree of kinship to the deceased: Regardless of whether the heir is male or female, the closer the relationship to the deceased, the more an individual will inherit.”
“The shares of the inheritance case are as follows: The son would receive 58.33%, the daughter would receive 29.17%, and the wife would receive 12.5% As for splitting the inheritance equally between the two children, it is important to note that the laws of inheritance are divine laws which came to us directly from Allah Ta’ala, …”
“In principle, a person's granddaughters will not inherit if the sons are present at the time of death. Therefore, in the enquired situation, the granddaughters will not inherit the property from their grandmother. There is no consideration to who the grandmother inherited the property from.”
