Question

What proof is there on the permissibility of asking Allah through the waseelah of the pious servants?

Answer

According to the Aqidah (belief) of the Ahle Sunnat wal Jama'at, it is absolutely permissible to ask Allah Almighty through the mediation of the pious servants. In other words, presenting the waseelah of the pious servants in the Court of Allah is an easy means of acceptance of Duas, solving problems, getting rid of sufferings and attaining Religious and worldly goodness. Regarding Waseelah, Allah Almighty says in the Holy Qur'an:

Translation: O You Who Believe! Fear Allah, and seek the means towards Him, and strive in His cause, in the hope of attaining success. [Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:35] The Waseelah in Dua is proven from various Ahadith.

It is in Tirmizi Shareef:

Hazrat Uthman bin Hunaif Radi Allahu Anhu has narrated that a blind man presented himself in the Court of the Holy Prophet Sallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Pray for me that I may regain my sight." The Prophet Sallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said, "Perform ablution and read two Raka'ats of Nafil Namaaz and read this Dua:

"O Allah! Verily I ask of you and towards you I use the mediation of Nabi-e-Rahmat my Muhammad Mustafa Sallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam O Muhammad! Verily I turn through your Waseelah to your Creator for my needs so that my needs may be fulfilled. O Allah, accept for me the "intercession of Muhammad Sallahu Alaihi wa Sallam ] [Jaame Tirmizi Pg.197 Vol.2 And it is in Bukhari Shareef:

Translation: It was the custom and tradition of Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased him), that when there was a famine or drought, he would invoke Allah Subhanahu through the waseelah of Hazrat Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) in this way: O Allah, we used to make your Prophet Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam a means (waseelah) and we used to make dua to You through Him, so you used to send down rain upon us. Now we make Dua to You through the mediation of beloved uncle of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) Hazrat Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), so bless us with rain, then it would rain (thereafter). (Sahihul Bukhari Hadith number 978) It has been mentioned in Fataawa Bareilly Shareef regarding mediation (Waseelah) and seeking a solution through invocation (Istighaasah) that the great jurist Hazrat Jamal bin Abdillah bin Umar Makki says in his Fataawa:

"I was asked the Islamic ruling regarding that person who says Ya Rasoolallah, Ya Ali, Ya Shaikh Abdal Qadir in difficult times, is it permissible or not according to Sharee'ah?

So I replied, "Yes, it is permissible and desirable in Sharee'ah to seek the help of the saints and to call on them and invoke through them. None will deny the permissibility of these things except for those who are stubborn and those who have been deprived from the blessings of the pious servants. Furthermore even after passing away these pious personalities aid and assist the people like they did in their apparent lifetime, as it has been stated in the Fataawa of Imam Shaikh ul Islam Shihaab Ramalee Ansaari Alaihir Rahma: "I was asked by someone: do the Prophets, friends of Allah, righteous scholars of Islam and pious people, help and assist the people after their passing away? I replied to that individual with these words:

Seeking help from Prophets, friends of Allah, righteous Ulama and pious servants is permissible and undoubtedly these blessed personalities help the people even after their passing away (Wisaal shareef).

In short, the above mentioned Hadiths and verdicts of the great jurists have proven that the Prophets, Awliya, righteous Ulama and pious servants of Allah Almighty help the needy ones while they are in this world and even after their passing away, and it has also been proven that after their wisaal, it is permissible to ask Allah Subhanahu through their waseelah (Mediation).

Whatever will be asked in the Court of Allah Almighty via these pious personalities, will be given, and Allah Almighty gives and will continue to give. However, using the mediation of the pious servants in the Court of Allah Almighty to gain assistance either verbally or physically is an accepted tradition and confirmed to be desirable. (Fataawa Bareilly Shareef page number 306). And Allah Knows Best.
