RULING PERTAINING TO READING NAMAAZ WITH CLOTHES WHICH HAVE ANIMATE PICTURES

To perform Salaah while wearing such clothing that has a picture of an animal on it, is Makrooh e Tahreemi, just as it is stated in Raddul Muhtaar with Durr e Mukhtaar:

Translation: it is Makrooh to wear such clothing which have pictures of animate things on them, and it is Makrooh if there is a picture (which is animate) on the head of a Namaazi, or in front of him or opposite him, that is to his right or to his left, or on the place (i.e. the area) of prostration. This is even if the picture is on such a pillow that is hung and not laid out. (Raddul Muhtaar with Durr e Mukhtaar, Volume 2, Page 416-417, Chapter of Salaah/Darul Kutbul Ilmiyyah, Beirut) In response to a similar question, Imam e Ahle Sunnat Sayyidi Huzoor Ala Hazrat Radi Allahu Anh writes: "The image of a living thing (i.e. animate) in which its face is visible, and it is of such a size, that if it is placed on the floor, all its limbs can be clearly seen when in a standing position, then if such images are on the clothing, then to wear it, to have somebody wear it, to sell it or to give it as charity, all are impermissible, and it is Makrooh e Tahreemi to perform Salaah while wearing such clothing, and it is Waajib for such a Salaah to be repeated. The image on

such clothes should be erased or its head or face should be completely erased. After doing so, to wear it, to have someone wear it, to sell it or to give it as charity, will all be permissible. If it is of such a strong permanent colour that it cannot be erased or washed off, then a similar permanent colour should be applied to its head or face, in such a way whereby that portion of the image is erased. It should not be such that the colour of the limb only looks black (as if it has been coloured black), as this image will not be considered as having being erased.
