How and when is tahajjud performed?

“1. The time of tahajjud ends with subh saadiq. Subh saadiq is the final time of sehri. 2. Commence with two short rakaats. Then you may perform in pairs of two or four rakaats, preferably up to 8 rakaats.”

“If a person is confident that he will wake up during the last portion of the night to perform Tahajjud, then it is preferable for him to perform his Tahajjud first and thereafter perform Witr, so that Witr is the final Salaah of his night.”

“The time for performing Tahajjud Salaah begins after Esha Salaah and extends up to Subah Saadiq (true dawn), although it is more virtuous to perform Tahajjud Salaah in the latter portion of the night.”

“The night prayer before the time of Fajr sets in is referred to as tahajjud salāh. The time for tahajjud remains until al-Subh al-Sādiq (break of dawn). This is when the time for Fajr sets in and not necessarily the time when Fajr salāh is performed in the masjid.”
